((Anyone ever read that kid's book? "We're going on a bear hunt, we're off to catch a bear". It always scared me...x.x))
The scent of rabbit was fresh in the air as Mothpaw bounded down the steep slope, tripping often but always picking herself right back up and going on as fast as before. At least this part of CascadeClan territory was pretty grassy, and Mothpaw was pretty sure they were heading in the direction of one of the few flat fields to be found on the mountain. Brackenfur had taken her here once, but not to hunt...just to get a look at it. Now she was not with her mentor...in fact, she had sneaked out of camp, something she never did. But how could she say no to Hazelpaw? Remembering the apprentice, she glanced behind her and mewed, "Badgerface!"

Hazelpaw had been keeping up fairly well with the apprentice. They had finally reached the small patchy fields where the rabbits lived. He noticed that the she-cat had paused to say Badgerface What even was that. Hazelpaw was stumped it sure sounded funny though. He took a few moments to think of a retort coming up short he said the first thing that came to mind. "At least I'm not badgerfeet, you slowpoke" He mewled playfully. He crouched and leapt attempting to land on her back and flip her over on to her back.

Who was he calling slowpoke?!? Mothpaw skidded to a halt and spun around, planting her hind legs and leaping at Hazelpaw...who was, at the same time, leaping at her! Mewling in surprise, she realized it was too late to stop, so she pushed off the ground as hard as she could and leapt forward, paws outstretched, to meet Hazelpaw head on. They'd see who was the slowpoke now! "Better watch out, Badgerface!" she yowled, ears pricked as she flew through the air.

"Mousebrain!" Hazelpaws eyes widened as he noticed they were about to collide. He tried to maneuver in the air but that's surprising hard if you have never tried it. He hit her stomach throwing her slightly back into a tumble on the ground. He giggled as they rolled to a stop. He stood up dragging his paws on the ground. Padding around to face the opposite way he was facing with his head as far in the sky as possible. "Now about those rabbits" He scented the air and found one to the left a bit a ways. "Double team it or do you call firsties?" He asked in the first polite voice of the day.

"Ooof," Mothpaw mewed as she was knocked to the ground. She lifted herself up slowly and set about grooming her fur. The energetic moment had passed for now, and her shyness had come tumbling back in. Glancing over at Hazelpaw, she realized she'd never tried to hunt a rabbit before. All she knew was you had to run...and she wasn't that fast of a runner. "Let's...surround it," she suggested, standing up after a moment and shaking the dust from her fur. "That way, we'll have more of a chance to get it." [/size]

"Alright, I got the left." Hazelpaw mewed. He hat once squatted low and began to creep up to the rabbit. He'd never been rabbit hunting so he thought perhaps the mouse crouch would work. With those big ears he assumed that the rabbit would hear him before he smelled his scent so he crept on light paws towards the rabbit and when he was in place he waited for Mothpaw to take place. He would scare the rabbit in Mothpaws direction then it would be job to finish it off. Hazelpaw's stomach seemed to growl. He hadn't eaten in Starclan knows when. No problem after they had caught a few rabbits they could have a yummy snack. Hazelpaw was licking his lips now and it was getting harder to stand still while he waited for Mothpaw to take her place.

With a jolt of nervousness Mothpaw realized Hazelpaw was going to make her finish it up! She had no idea what to do! I can do it, she decided, shaking her head, crouching down, and creeping forward until she was on the other side of Hazelpaw--she could see the other cat's eyes from the grass across from her. As she was settling down, Mothpaw rustled a bit of grass, and the rabbit looked up...but, after a moment, continued to munch on its grass. Okay, here goes nothing... she thought, tensing her muscles and waiting for Hazelpaw to startle the rabbit towards her. [/size]

Hazelpaw finally caught site of the other cat directly across from him. He let his tail flick in the air to let her know he was going now. He busted from the brush directly to the left of the rabbit almost scaring it to death and sending it directly for Mothpaw. He ran after it to make sure it stayed on course and when it reached Mothpaw he would corner it so the only option he had was to be their meal! His tail lashed triumphantly but the hunt wasnt over yet!

[dice=6] Crap! Hazelpaw's tail flicked up...what was that supposed to mean? Mothpaw nearly had a heart attack as the rabbit raced toward her. Hissing, she sprang to her paws and leaped forward just as the rabbit was about to run right into her...it swerved, leaping out of her way, and her claws barely grazed its ear. Groaning, she spun around and sprinted after the rabbit, yowling to Hazelpaw, "See if you can catch it!"

[dice=6] awesome. Hazelpaw swerved to the right of the rabbit like his mentor had mentioned. Best to attack from the side. He ran until he was in snapping length of the leg. He grabbed the leg in his mouth but the movement sent him and the rabbit sprawling he didn't leg go of the rabbit in his mouth however. He quickly finished it off and then stood up peering over to Mothpaw. "Alright, next ones yours" He joked licking the blood away from his mouth. His ears pricked straight up to hear any other prey his mouth open slightly to catch all the scents. He grabbed the scruff of the rabbit and had a rough time of dragging the rabbit back to Mothpaw it was almost as big as him! "We did it!" He yowled happily then decided he probably shouldn't have yowled so loud it now alerted all the possible other rabbits in short distance that cats were near. Mothpaw watched in amazement as Hazelpaw raced after the rabbit. For a moment she was pretty sure he was going to miss it, but...there! He had it! She padded forward, tail held high in congratulations as her fellow apprentice struggled to drag his catch over to her. "You did it," she mewed, not bitterly but happily. "I just scared it into running faster." But...she wasn't upset about it. It was just one catch, right? Time to find some more!
[dice=6] Success!!
Hazelpaw's cry probably had scared away the rest of the prey, but Mothpaw sniffed the air anyway...and detected the scent of ground squirrel! Eyes widening, she tried to remember what Brackenfur had told her about squirrels...how their feet were very sensitive, and they didn't pay as much attention to sounds as they did to the vibrations of pawsteps. Narrowing her eyes, the young gray apprentice flicked her tail to Hazelpaw to tell him to stand still, while she crept forward paw-by-paw towards the squirrel-scent. It turned out the squirrel was a heck of a lot farther away than she'd thought, and she was left stalking like an idiot several more rabbit-hops than she needed to. But she didn't care...she was going to catch this prey! When the little brown body finally came into view she paused, tail twisting slightly in the air to keep her balance as she padded forward on her tiptoes. She rustled some bushes, but the squirrel was too interested in its meal to notice. A little bit closer...Mothpaw sprang, claws outstretched, and landed just behind the squirrel. It gave a little squeak before darting away, but Mothpaw hooked it with her claws before it got too far and gave it a quick bite to the head.
"Look!" she mewed excitedly, grabbing the small groundsquirrel by the tail and trotting back to Mothpaw. "Look how well we're doing!" Oh, Brackenfur would be pleased. He may have told her about squirrels, but they'd never practiced catching them! How could he be mad at her when she came back with this? He couldn't, she decided. When Hazelpaw saw the size of the squirrel Mothpaw was bringing back to where he stood with the rabbit he sprung into the air. "Yes! You know they'll be happy to see us with this loot!" He said happily. He looked at the rabbit and now his stomach was growling more and more. One more piece of prey and they could eat. "I call nexties!" He whined before throwing his mouth in the air and scenting in all directions. He had to wander a bit before any scent hit his lungs. A field mouse seemed to be scurrying through the grass in front of him. [dice=6]RATS
He swiftly ran towards the mouse his hunger was blinding him on how to approach the mouse before he was even close enough to pounce it had heard him crashing through the bracken and had scurried away out of reach. "AWW MAN!" He whined even louder now.

A soft giggle escaped Mothpaw's lips at Hazelpaw's silly mistake. "Badgerfeet!" she giggled, padding over and swatting him on the ear. "That's okay, we've got enough. Want to go back?" Mothpaw? she didn't really want to go back. Well, that is...part of her did. She wanted to stay out and hunt some more, or explore...she felt so free! Still, that small voice in the back of her head warned her, You better go back before Brackenfur notices you're gone. You'd better go back! Shaking her head, Mothpaw forced the thoughts out of her mind. No, she was having fun. How could Brackenfur be mad at her? But if Hazelpaw wanted to go home, she wouldn't mind...

"No way! I've never been this far in the territory, Lightstep never brings me anywhere anymore." He said exaggerating a tad bit but nothing fatal. His ears twitched with excitement. Now the prospect of adventure had driven his hunger away. "I think we should bury the rabbit and squirrel or bring them back to camp and then go exploring!" He propositioned waiting to see the young apprentices reaction as he waited a butterfly had decided to flutter by Hazelpaw's nose. Fatal mistake. He padded after it attempting to snatch it between his paws. [/size]

Good! Hazelpaw didn't wanna go home, either. Mothpaw watched as her fellow apprentice chased after a butterfly, but she didn't wanna follow...she was too busy wondering what they should do next. "I don't think I wanna hunt anymore..." she mewed uncertainly, giving her chest fur a few rapid licks. "We've already got two each, so our mentors can't get mad at us for staying out a little longer. Maybe we should..." she let her voice trail off as shyness came over her. Hazelpaw might thing she was a mousebrain if she said what she wanted to do....
((maybe later they should get stuck in a mudslide, and Lightstep/Bracken can come get them? If they got a little hurt, it'd give Fernpool something to do ^.^))
