~ Chapter One ~
- Water Play -
~-----------------------------------------------~
Purplepaw padded into the small clearing with a mouthful of marigold and shook out her short pelt happily. Padding towards the medicine cat den, she entered and placed the marigold at her paws before opening her mouth to mew. “Dovepelt, I’ve brought you the marigold.”
Purplepaw was a Cascade Clan apprentice and she was now, officially nine moons old. She was a short haired little she-cat with brilliant purple eyes that gleamed in the daylight and reflected the things around her with interest. Her pelt was a brilliant shade of snowy white that contrasted with her eyes perfectly. The medicine cat, Dovepelt, was a young grey she-cat with gleaming blue eyes and quick feet.
The she-cat came forward and inspected the small bundle at the apprentice’s paws and smiled lifting her head once more. “Thank you Purplepaw.” She purred. “I’ll go put them in their place and you can go play with the other apprentices.” The young apprentice dipped her head and turned to pad out into the clearing.
---
Echofrost wiggled his tail slightly as he hid between the ferns stalking a mouse. He had just paused to pounce when the mouse looked up in his direction. Catching his breath, Echofrost crouched low and waited until the mouse looked away then pounced on it with a yowl. The mouse tried to dart but Echofrost caught it by the tail and with a single blow, the mouse was dead. Lifting the creature by its tail, Echofrost let out a breath of satisfaction and turned to head back towards camp.---
Purplepaw settled herself in front of the apprentice den and began to groom her already glossy pelt to perfection. She brushed her rough tongue back and forth across the paws and chest and made her way down her back before moving to lie down and groom her flank. She was just resuming her grooming when there was the noise of pawsteps entering the Cascade Clan camp. Flicking her white ears towards the sound, Purplepaw paused and turned her head.
Echofrost had just entered camp with a mouse and two fish in his jaws. The apprentice scrambled to her paws and discarded her grooming as she raced across the clearing to meet the warrior. Skidding to a stop before him, she looked up into the eyes of the massive tabby and smiled shyly.
“So you wet out hunting today, huh, Echofrost?” she mewed softly flicking her ears nervously. The tabby flicked his ears as well betraying no emotion and wiggled his tail tip before nodding.
“Yes, your mentor should have taken you out today as well.” The warrior replied nonchalantly. Purplepaw gazed up at him with wonder in her eyes before dipping her head again.
“Thistletail has been in the den with Dovepelt all day. It seems his cracked pads and injuries have gotten worse over the past few days so I offered to go out for some marigold.” The young apprentice replied softly. Echofrost thrashed his tail from side to side irritably and shifted his gaze towards the medicine cat den.
“Well, it’ll do the clan no good for you to be held back in your training.” The warrior growled gruffly. “Come on.” He said and flicked his tail signaling Purplepaw to follow as the great tabby tuned and led the way from the camp.
Purplepaw bounced excitedly after Echofrost as the warrior led her through the territory. His stride was long and impatient and she had to jog in order not to fall behind. Noticing this, Echofrost slowed down and gave the young apprentice a small lick on the head in apology. Purplepaw beamed and shoved her head into his flank throwing the warrior slightly off balance.
“You’re such a mousebrain.” She said softly. “How come you act all indifferent in camp but when it’s just us your all normal?” she asked looking up expectantly and with a wide grin. The tabby half growled playfully and flicked her on the head with his tail before turning without an answer.
“Come on.” He called over his shoulder. “Let’s hunt in the river.”
Purplepaw beamed and bounced on ahead passing the warrior as he shifted his course towards the river. She raced on quickly and reached it ahead of Echofrost then settled down by the river bank to wait. Looking down at her reflection, the she-cat wrinkled her nose. How was it that, being nine moons old, she was so tiny? Echofrost was three times her size and Dovepelt had told her that even full grown, Purplepaw was still going to be very tiny. It just wasn’t fair. How come her parents had to be small and his big? They would never be able to measure up together.
The apprentice let out a heavy sigh and dropped her head so that it hung. There was a small shove from behind and she suddenly toppled head first into the water. Spluttering and choking, the young she-cat thrust her legs out and surfaced before beginning to swim towards the riverbank on her side of the border. Scrambling up onto it, she stood, dripping, and glared at the grinning tom who was looking smugly down at her from the higher rock perch where she had just been minutes ago.
“That’s for calling me a mousebrain.” He said before sitting and curling his tail over his paws. Purplepaw continued glaring and began to groom. After a few minutes, she was semi-dry and ready to go, but Purplepaw refused to look at the tom until Echofrost leapt down from the higher rock and gave her pelt a few licks. With a small huff, the apprentice turned and shouldered past Echofrost alerting the tabby that he was forgiven. With a kit like pounce, he pinned the apprentice to the ground and gave her a gentle lick between the ears.
Purplepaw growled and kicked Echofrost off of her harder than usual and the tom leapt back in confusion. Purplepaw scrambled to her feet and turned with her tail held high to stalk into a group of ferns that grew by the riverside. Echofrost cocked his head inquisitively to the side and opened his mouth to question when suddenly the apprentice spun around and leapt on top of him
The two scuffled for a moment before Echofrost had pined Purplepaw down again and the apprentice hissed playfully. “Darn.” She mewed making the warrior purr in amusement. Nosing the apprentice gently, Echofrost backed off and let her scramble up again. Purplepaw sprung in one last attempt to catch the warrior off guard and the scuffling resumed. Echofrost and Purplepaw rolled along the riverbank dodging each others blows when suddenly there was a splash and a chilling coolness enveloped them both.
Everything spun and water once again drenched the apprentice’s coat as she scrambled away from Echofrost and struck out towards the riverbank. Echofrost also began to move towards the riverbank but a strong current was pulling the two cats back. Purplepaw struck out and lashed her paws fearfully as she was swept further and further away from the bank and towards the middle of the river. Suddenly two strong jaws grasped her by the scruff and pulled Purplepaw towards the riverbank. She looked up and saw Echofrost dragging her forward.
He eventually felt the pebbly footing of the bank and managed to walk up and drop Purplepaw onto the soft grass up away from the rushing water of the river. The apprentice landed in a small dazed heap as the warriors sides heaved. “You really need to practice your swimming.” Echofrost purred feebly trying to regain his breath. Purplepaw blinked and realized what had happened. Scrambling to her paws, she raced over to the massive tabby and began to purr whilst rubbing her head against his shoulder in thanks. Echofrost smiled and bowed his head to nose the apprentice affectionately when a sudden rustle in the bushes made them freeze.
Looking up and around Echofrost’s big muzzle, Purplepaw saw her mentor emerge from the bushes with a horribly smug look on his face. She felt Echofrost tense but gave the warrior a subtle lick on the cheek before he moved to straighten himself and both cats wondered how much Thistletail had seen.
“You need to teach your apprentice better swimming skills if she is ever going to become a warrior.” Echofrost said in an icily indifferent tone. Thistletail just flicked his tail back and forth still looking smug.
“Purplepaw was only a few strides away from the bank. You were just being overprotective.” The golden tom replied. Purplepaw bristled and pressed herself against Echofrost’s side defensively. She didn’t want to say that she wasn’t in control but she didn’t want Thistletail to bother Echofrost like that anymore. Luckily, she was saved from either as another cat came padding out of the ferns to stand by Thistletail’s side.
“You are much too fond of that apprentice for your own good, Echofrost.” The other cat, a tortoiseshell she-cat by the name of Cloudfeather, mewed warningly to Echofrost. There wasn’t a trace of smugness or amusement in her eyes as she she-cat stared evenly towards her fellow warrior.
Echofrost grunted in irritation and pushed Purplepaw roughly away from his side with a big paw. He then stood and turned to stalk back upriver. Purplepaw let out a small yowl of dismay and shot her mentor a look of pure annoyance. Thistletail’s eyes danced happily and Cloudfeather shook her head.
