Dawnpaw looked up to her mentor, and thought, again. "I think mouse bile helps to take away ticks." she answered. She thought harder this time. And after about a minute of thinking, she spoke.
"I have no idea where it comes from." she confessed. "All I know is that it smells really bad." Dawnpaw winced at the memory of the scent of mouse bile. Yuck.

Fernpool listened and nodded. That was about right. No other clan cats knew much more than that so Dawnpaw was fine. "Good."Fernpool praised. "Now, comes the...gross part." she said." First, we need to catch a mouse and kill it. Would you like to do the honors or shall I?"
This wasn't the worst; Fernpool didn't like collecting mouse bile from live or freshly killed mice but there was no food to spare in the clan from the fresh kill pile. Especially if there were the beginnings of mudslides which would soon make the prey scarce.
[ooc: if you do remember the dice roll. XD]

"Would you mind hunting, I don't know how." Dawnpaw reminded her mentor. "I Think I Might be able to learn by watching." she mewed. She would like to learn how to hunt. Dawnpaw had always seen the warrior's apprentices coming back from their hunting patrols, heads high and proud. All of the the kits in the nursery admired them, while Dawnkit, at the time, was always looking up towards the stars, admiring Their beauty.

Fernpool listened to her apprentice in shock. She didn't know how to hunt? But hadn't she learned that in warrior training? Well, come to think of it, Dawnpaw's first mentor was Fernpool. This kit was unlike other medicine cat apprentice's. She hadn't under gone any warrior training before become the said apprentice.
Nodding her head, Fernpool smiled again. "I didn't realize you hadn't known. I guess I just expect so much from you despite your young age."she almost cooed at the young kit. It was true; Dawnpaw was only just over six moons old.
"Alright, I'll teach you now." Fernpool said and stood. "The first thing about hunting mice is that they can sense your pawstep vibrations before they smell you. While rabbits do exactly to opposite. So the key when hunting mice is to keep your weight back on your hunches and keep as quiet as possible." she explained. "Now watch closely."
Sniffing the air, Fernpool immediately caught the scent of a mouse just a few fox lengths away from where the two cats were conversing. She dropped into a low crouch and began to stalk towards the mouse. Sometimes apprentices tended to put all their weight on one side or stick up their rears too much but Fernpool was practiced in the hunting of mice, so she skillfully crept towards it without giving the slightest hint of her presence.
[dice=6] hehe...
Fernpool resisted the urge to wiggle her tail excitedly. It had been awhile since the medicine cat had been out hunting and it brought back thrills. Waiting until she was exactly two mouse lengths away from her prey, Fernpool leapt out of the ferns around her and pounced onto the mouse. With a firm blow to the head and quick bite, she had killed it.
Sitting herself down once more, the medicine cat look to her apprentice in satisfaction.
[ooc: ooh, I didn't knwo she couldn't hunt! XD hehe, more fun for me.] [rand=242248622690796940989219939912560155997715248465574861063847176765]

"Wow!" Dawnpaw exclaimed, her dark green eyes wide in awe. "You caught it!" Dawnpaw let out a loud purr as she waved her tail excitedly. "That looks like fun, so, do we need to get the mouse bile now, Or do we need More Mice ?" Dawnpaw flicked her tail, Hinting that she would like to try. Dawnpaw wasn't really the type of cat that would flat out say,Lemme try., but most cats usually got the point of what she was trying to say.

Fernpool let out a mrrr of amusment. "The more prey for the clan the better. At least for now." she replied. "Go on, have a try." she encouranged. "We can catch the two of them and then take them back to camp because it will be harder to remove the bile and then carry everything back."

"Alright...." she mewed.
Dawnpaw tasted the air for mouse. CascadeClan cats, grass, salt from the river... Dawnpaw listed all of the things she smelled. Mouse!!! Dawnpaw saw a little rustling in the grass a few fox-lengths away. She got into the hunter's crouch, mimicking Fernpool, and stalked towards the Plump rodent. [dice=6] Aw, shoot. First times a winner, right.
Dawnpaw started to stalk towards the mouse, staying un-detected. She flattened her ears to her head, And pounced!! At the last second, the mouse turned it's head, it's face with an expression of fear and surprise. It started to run, and it got away. Dawnpaw yowled in surprise and fell to the ground, tumbling in the grass. "Mouse dung." she muttered under her breath. Dawnpaw got up and shook the dirt and leaves out of her fur. She walked toward her mentor, but a shock of pain went through her right back paw. "Ow!" she yowled. She limped toward Fernpool. "Guess that didn't work." she muttered. "And I think I have a thorn in my paw."

Fernpool settled herself to watch the young apprentice by lying down with her paws crossed. The warm forest floor felt good under the tired she-cats bones. Wait, no that sounded like an elder. Smiling to herself, Fernpool turned her attention to Dawnpaw.
The kit had spotted a mouse and was stalking it now. Fernpool was about to open her mouth and tell the apprentice to shift her weight to the left, but Dawnpaw leapt. With a yowl and tumble, the young kit rolled into a ball as the mouse streaked away. Fernpool shot to her feet and raced to the young kits side as it limped towards her.
Fernpool licked the apprentices head in sympathy and sat down to examine the upraised paw. Yes, Dawnpaw was right. There was a sharp, black thorn wedged in the pad of the young apprentices paw. Luckily, it wasn't poisonous.
"Yes, you do." Fernpool murmured. "Hold still now, and let me pull it out." she advised. Crouching and bowing her head, Fernpool carefully clamped her teeth around the edges of the thorn. Giving it a slight but firm tug she pulled it out. Spitting the thorn onto the ground she began to lick the blood that seeped out of the tiny wound. It stopped a few moments later and Fernpool straightened.
"It was a good attempt but your weight was centered mainly on your right which is why the mouse heard you. Don't worry though; we can extract bile from this mouse back at camp. Then I can also put some yarrow ointment on that paw of yours to help it heal quickly and stop throbbing as I'm sure it is now. Are you hurt enough that you want to stay here and wait for me to bring it or would you like to head back to camp?" she asked.

Dawnpaw bowed her head in thanks. "I think I can make it back to camp." Dawnpaw walked in a circle, just barley touching he paw to the ground. It did sting a little when she touched it, but it was mostly because she didn't to infect it with all of the dirt and leaves on the ground. "Okay, I'm fine." she meowed. Dawnpaw started to walk toward the CascadeClan camp. She flicked her ear in frustration. How could Poppyfrost walk like this?! she thought. As Dawnpaw started to lean to the right, she lashed her tail to keep her balance, and continued to limp toward the camp.
[Poppyfrost is a made-up cat, who supposedly had a bad leg.]

Fernpool nodded accepting Dawnpaw's decision though she didn't particularly approve. Watching anxiously as they began to walk, Fernpool picked up her dead mouse by the tail and dragged a piece of moss with it. Then she picked up a stick and carried it all in her mouth on the way back to the camp.
When they entered the camp, she continued to watch Dawnpaw anxiously and as soon as they entered the medicine cat den, dropped all the items quickly onto the fern-woven mat before racing to the shelf just ahead. Spotting her shell container with the yarrow ointment, Fernpool dipped her paw into in and padded over to Dawnpaw careful not to drip any of the ointment.
The apprentice's leg was raised so she carefully dabbed the yarrow ointment onto the wounded area. The paw was slightly puffy and swollen due to the pricking but the yarrow would help with that. Fernpool’s anxieties began to cease, now knowing that she had done everything she could and it was, after all, just a pricked paw.
Padding over to a wet piece of moss in the corner, Fernpool washed her paw and then trotted back over to Dawnpaw and the things they had brought. "Now, are you alright or do you wish to wait for me to show you until tomorrow?" she asked.

" Is it alright if you show me today?" she asked, padding over to her moss bed to rest her paw. " It seems, Er, Interesting." She laughed a bit and thought. Mouse Bile. interesting...she chuckled to herself. She yawned and licked her front paw a couple of times, and swiped it over her ear, waiting for Her mentor's reply. [Mini writer's block -.-']

Fernpool nodded. She was about to say that if Dawnpaw wanted to learn today that she ought to lay down, but the apprentice was smart and there was no need to. "Be careful and don't lick that paw. Yarrow ointment is foul once in the mouth and you will taste it for many sunrises." she advised instead before rolling the mouse over with her nose.
"Alright, first," Fernpool began as she tugged her fern-woven mat from under the mouse, "you make sure the mouse is facing upwards." She said and tossed the mat aside just in case. "Then, here comes the nasty part, you must carefully slit it open with a gentle claw." she said lifting her paw. Showing a small, sharp claw, the medicine cat bent over her mouse and slit it neatly down the front. "Then, you must remove the liver carefully as to not mess up the rest of the mouse or puncture any of the organs. It can always be used to feed a hungry mouth later." Fernpool mewed. She carefully pulled apart the mouse and extracted what looked like a small, red bean and placed it on the ground beside the mouse. Pushing the rest of the mouse aside, she continued. "Then, you place the liver on a fern shell." At this statement, Fernpool stood up and shuffled to her shelves to rummage for a long, firm fern shell. Finding one, she padded over and placed it underneath the liver after folding it into a small cup-like cylinder. "Now, in the same careful manner, you slit the liver open and the bile will pour out into the fern shell." she said and demonstrated. The mouse bile was gooey and disgusting as it oozed out of the liver and soon the whole den began to reek. Wrinkling her nose, Fernpool pulled aside the now empty liver, and placed it on the ground. "Then, keeping it in the container, you move it to the shelf." she said.
"In order to use bile, or rather, transport it, you must soak a piece of moss on the end of a stick in the bile then pass it on to the waiting cat. You must always remind them not to touch the bile with their mouths and to wash their paws in a stream after using it." she explained while placing the bile container on a shelf. "Do you remember what bile is used best for?" Fernpool asked as she once again wiped her paws on the wet moss. She hadn't actually touched the bile, but it was better to play it safe just in case.
[ooc: no worries, you ought to have something to work with now]

Dawnpaw watched closely as Fernpool extracted the strong smelling bile. Dawnpaw had gotten a touch of the scent and sneezed almost immediately. She yawned and answered Fernpool's question.
"Mouse bile is best for getting Rid of Ticks." she answered, Thinking back to when they were first in the den, before they went out. Dawnpaw waved her tail,
"Is that all I'm going to learn today, Fernpool?" she asked, her eyes glittering with excitement.
[ That's the most hyper thing I can come up with at the moment xD.]

"That is correct," Fernpool replied smiling at her apprentice’s eagerness. "Well, for now yes. It's been a very exciting day, lesson and all, and I think I'll go take a nap or share tongues if anyone is up for it," the medicine cat replied yawning. "You did very well, Dawnpaw."
With a cheerful lick to the apprentice's head, the young she-cat padded out of her den and lay down in a sunny spot just beside it. Lying down, she crossed her paws and yawned again before beginning to lick her chest lazily.
[ooc: no worries, its fine. Dawnpaw can either hang around and ask questions, bounce around or do whatever she likes. I don't want to close the thread just yet. XD]

Dawnpaw let out a soft purr. "I'll rest, Iv'e been through alot today." she mewed, remembering the Herb lesson, the Hunting, and the thorn.
**After Fernpool left..**
Dawnpaw yawned as she saw Fernpool walk out. She was most likely sunbathing, like most cats do. It was truly relaxing, the warm sun on your fur, the soft grass underneath you... Dawnpaw let out another purr by just remembering it! But she wanted to make sure that her pad didn't get any dirt in it, so she napped in her warm moss bed.
